Over the next week or so, we’ll be bringing you a scooter a day, with the 2010 scooter models available kicking off today with the lovely Piaggio Liberty and Liberty “Elle”. Future model profiles will include scooters from Aprilia, Peugeot, Kymco and more. The Liberty is a successful lightweight, high-wheel scooter for Piaggio, maintaining its 2009 looks and technology, and is available in 50cc, 125cc and 150 cc four-stroke versions. There is also a 50cc two-stroke available.

The Liberty “Elle” 2010 version is designed specifically for women, with a lower seat height of 765 mm for the 50cc, and 775 mm for the 125 cc, which is 20 mm lower than the standard versions. The Liberty Elle comes in pink colour, with a dedicated top case and “Elle” branded helmet.

The Piaggio Liberty has a tubular steel frame, and ten spoke alloy wheels measuring 16 inches at the front and 14 inches at the rear. They are shod with 90/80 and 110/80 tyres. The rear has a 140 mm drum brake and the front has a 240 mm front disc with a double piston calliper.

The Liberty engine range includes the powerful 125 and 150 cc versions with seven litre fuel tank, while the smaller 50cc versions are great for city riding for younger and female users, with the choice of either a two-stroke or four-stroke.

Style
The frontal view is defined by the handlebar mounted headlamp - with its subtly triangular design a reference to the headlight of its extremely successful and imposing high wheeled big brother, the Beverly - and the highly protective leg shield which an elegant chromed accent bearing the Piaggio logo.

Chrome accents also enhance other elements, such as the turn signals with clear lenses, the oddments storage compartment and the fork stanchion guards. A chrome surround also graces the large, clear and easily readable instrument panel, designed to match the looks of the vehicle and featuring a speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge. Completing the instrumentation are a comprehensive array of indicator lights (fuel reserve, dipped and full beam headlamp, turn indicators and oil warning light) and a practical clock with calendar function.

In addition to chrome accents, the style of the Liberty is further enhanced by number of sophisticated details emphasising the outstanding quality of the vehicle, such as the painted rear grab handle, the body-coloured platform spoiler and the heat shield for the silencer, with its more modern, sporty design.

The low saddle (only 785 mm on the 50 and 795 mm on the 125 and 150) allows riders of all statures to reach the ground with ease, and it’s is also longer for greater passenger comfort, while the passenger also gains sturdy and ergonomic fold-out footrests.

Chassis
Liberty it’s equipped with a high strength tubular steel frame and 10 spoke alloy wheels, measuring 16” at the front and 14” at the rear and shod with 90/80 and 110/80 tyres respectively.

The brake system is composed of a reliable and modular 140 mm drum brake at the rear joined by a 240 mm diameter front disc, stopped by a new double piston calliper. The result is powerful braking ensuring short stopping distances and offering great modularity.

Engines
Piaggio Liberty stands out as one of the most versatile scooters on the market with a comprehensive choice of proven engines: ranging from the sparkling 2-stroke 50 cc and the economical 4-stroke 50 cc to the classic, perfectly balanced 125 cc and the modern 150 cc, both of which 4-strokes.
The 2 valve air cooled 150 cc unit gives the Liberty a decisive character and eager responsiveness in city traffic, while offering remarkable versatility, making this the ideal scooter for both longer urban routes and extra urban commuting.

With the 125 cc 4-stroke unit, the Liberty strikes the perfect compromise between performance, accessibility and economy. Boasting the same chassis features as its bigger 150 cc brother, Liberty 125 is the easy solution for metropolitan mobility whether riding alone or with a passenger.
Liberty 125 and Liberty 150 both come equipped with a 7 litre tank: together with the extremely economical engines it offers an even longer range than ever before.

The two 50 cc engine variants offer younger and female users the choice between the verve of a 2-stroke and the impressive efficiency of the extraordinarily economical 4-stroke version.

Equipment and accessories
To match the urban vocation of the Liberty, the Piaggio design team focused particularly on versatility and ease of use. Liberty comes as standard with a rear luggage rack and fold-out passenger footrests. In addition to the large and practical flat footrest platform, a compartment under the saddle large enough for a demi-jet helmet and an additional compartment at the rear of the leg shield offer even more space for carrying objects.

The Beverly that is sold in Australia is different from that shown here.
We get the model shown left, the more mature model shall we say!
The Piaggio Beverly in Europe is the best-selling medium-high cylinder capacity scooter in the competitive and prestigious high-wheel, with more than 215,000 units sold, is now available for 2008 in the new Tourer version.
The Beverly Tourer has an impressive design, and no expense has been spared in the on-board equipment and finish.

The Beverly Tourer is the new entry in the Beverly range for 2008, with 400, 250 and 125 cc engines. A technologically advanced performer, the Beverly Tourer is characterized by the sleek lines of a high wheel scooter, sure to give the rider all the thrills of a motorcycle ride, while remaining in full control of the vehicle.

Perfect for every-day use, the Beverly Tourer meets the widest range of requirements for safe mobility, completely at its ease in the metropolitan environment where its dynamic qualities and distinctive elegance are notable to say the least.

The refined finish and the meticulous attention to detail make the Beverly Tourer really stand out from the crowd: the frontal has been completely redesigned, in line with its “big brother” the Cruiser. The headlight is mounted on the handlebars with an elegant windscreen made of tinted methacrylate above the bars, to offer the rider more protection.

The leg shield has a new radiator grill with a chromed finish, giving the Beverly Tourer the looks of a real classic.

The elegant Piaggio “family feeling” style has been embellished with chromed finishes that characterise the lateral trim on the leg shield and on the rear side panels. The rear-view mirrors are also chromed and match the new headlight-handlebars design, giving the Beverly Tourer a sophisticated and important image.

The exhaust heatshield on the 250 and 125 cc version is chromed. Other changes include the new front mudguard and the rear light, which is now clear. The finish of the seat is also new with contrasting stitching, while the storage compartment under the seat can hold two half-jet helmets.

The instruments have been redesigned with new graphics in line with the new classic Beverly Tourer image, reasserting a stylistic coherence, which has been the underlying theme in planning the new Beverly family. Also the choice of the paint has been studied to exalt the elegance of the lines and finishes on the Beverly Tourer. The Beverly Tourer comes in a choice of four colours: Pulsar Grey, Midnight Blue, Naiade Ivory and Graphite Black.

With a wide range of modern engines, all 4-stroke, 4-valve and liquid cooled, the Beverly Tourer offers the highest performance in the various classes of cylinder capacity. The 125, 250 ie and 400 ie engines in fact are the best performers in their respective categories for power and torque. Furthermore, the three engines conform to Euro 3 emission standards.

The brilliant performance is set off by a first-class chassis. The high-resistance tubular steel trellis double cradle frame has a hydraulic telescopic fork with 41 mm stanchions (35 mm for the 250 and 125 cc versions), while the rear suspension has two double acting hydraulic shock absorbers with four-position spring preload to let you adjust the suspension of the vehicle to suit your riding style.

The high wheels with wide tyres (16”-110/70 front and 14”-150/70 rear, on the 400 cc, and 16”-110/70 front and 16”-140/70 rear on the 250 and 125 cc) and the powerful brakes (combined braking with two 260 mm front discs and one 240 mm rear disc on the 400 cc, traditional braking with a single 260 mm steel front disc and a 240 mm rear disc on the 125/250 cc), are choices that make the Beverly Tourer an extremely safe vehicle with excellent roadholding.

When I first saw this bike I thought it was just another version of the X9. In a sense it is, but more correctly it is a blend of all the other Piaggio maxi-scooters thrown together to create not something new really, but something different. It’s an odd way to create a new bike but makes sense. There isn’t much detail on the bike out there and it’s all in Italian, Spanish etc. but this is what we find:

It has the X8’s boot and rear layout (as does the MP3) while the front is in theory derived from the X9 though in practice the headlights remind me of the Gilera Nexus. The front mudguard is fixed to the front bodywork giving an effect a little like the BMW F650 GS.
The dashboard has a nice effect I believe taken from the X9 500 Evo. The silly little backrest looks way uncool but is probably very practical. Colours are grey, black and dark blue.

There are three engines: The 400cc MASTER engine from the X8 400, the 250cc QUASAR engine from the Vespa GTS 250 and Gilera Nexus 250, both 4 valve plus a 125cc unit, not sure which one but it delivers the full 14.9 CV/11 kW allowed to those on ‘L’ plates.

Verdict
It’s a nice bike but why not just get an X8 and save your hard earned. Perhaps I’m missing something. I can understand people wanting the avoid the deep v shape of the X8’s front but the X8 just appears to be a better proven bike for less money. I’ll wait until some decent reviews and specifications come out in English before I bury it completely but at the moment it’s no contes
